President’s Message January 2013
The year is starting out to be an interesting one! The Maple Leafs are back in action and labour is on the front pages of most newspapers. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Our Local is currently in bargaining negotiations with Atlantic Packaging – Brampton. To date we have sat down twice with this employer. The union has filed for a Conciliation Officer and will most likely be awarded one next week. We have meetings scheduled for Feb. 5th and 6th. The Union and Employer have agreed to a blackout on these negotiations.
The next set of bargaining will be with the Hamilton Spectator, we have sent them a list of available dates for April. The employer has not yet responded. The current one-year agreement expires in May.
We presently have many ongoing grievances in various stages and many WSIB claims being challenged and also in various stages. The Local will not back down from these fights and win or lose we are all in. We will use our lawyers or WSIB specialists and exhaust all avenues of remedy for all of our members.
The lawyers for Local 100M have been in the news almost daily for the past few weeks. Howard Goldblatt of Sach, Goldblatt and Mitchell, is in the forefront of the Ontario Teachers battle. Howard is a very astute Lawyer and we give no ground to anyone by having this firm on retainer.
